UKRI Global Talent Visa Guide for Researchers & Academics

How to secure endorsement from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and build an evidence portfolio that showcases your academic excellence.

    Who Is This Route For?

The Science and Research route is endorsed by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), in partnership with the Royal Society, Royal Academy of Engineering, British Academy, and other research councils. It covers:

    Scientists

Biological, physical, chemical, environmental, and computer sciences

    Academics

University lecturers, professors, postdoctoral researchers with significant publications

    Humanities & Social Sciences

Historians, economists, political scientists, linguists via the British Academy

    UKRI Endorsement Criteria

UKRI has a streamlined process compared to Tech Nation. The key areas assessed are:

    • Significant peer-reviewed publications in respected journals (Nature, Science, field-specific top-tier journals)
    • Research grants secured — especially as Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-PI
    • Citations and h-index demonstrating impact within your field
    • Invited talks at international conferences and symposia
    • Contributions to academic bodies — journal editorial boards, peer review panels, examination committees
    • Research that has led to real-world impact — policy changes, clinical applications, industry partnerships
    • Awards, fellowships, or prizes from recognised academic institutions

    Fast-Track for Fellowship Holders

If you hold (or have held) an eligible research fellowship or award, you may qualify for a fast-track endorsement — meaning a simplified application with fewer evidence requirements. Eligible fellowships include:

    UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship
    Royal Society University Research Fellowship
    Wellcome Trust Senior Investigator Awards
ERC Starting, Consolidator, or Advanced Grants
    EPSRC Fellowship programmes
    British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowships

    Tips for Researchers

    • Lead with your most impactful publications — quality over quantity
    • Include your Google Scholar profile or ORCID with citation metrics
    • Recommendation letters from department heads, journal editors, or senior fellows carry the most weight
    • Show impact beyond academia — policy influence, patents, industry collaboration, public engagement
    • If you're early career, highlight trajectory: rapid publications, prestigious grants, fast promotions
